In the old days, these traditionnal flat bottomed boats - called gabardes or gabares - would carry casks of wine, salt or fertilizers on the Loire river, often dubbed the "french Mississipi" since it is the longuest river in the country. Today the gabares are still used by local fishermen. They can be rented at Monsoreau or Candes Saint Martin (one of the most charming villages of France).
